Attentional bias towards supraliminal and subliminal smoking cues in smokers:

چکیده
This study attempted to replicate findings of an attentional bias towards supraliminal and subliminal smoking cues in the dot-probe task for smokers. Food-related cues were used as a control due to its natural reward properties. Further, the effects of cognitive load during the dot-probe task on attentional bias was explored. Smokers (n=43) and non-smokers (n=41) completed two versions (load and no load) of a dot-probe task containing smokingand foodrelated cues, as well as subliminal smoking cues (16.7 ms presentation-time). In the smokers, attentional bias towards smoking cues was significant under cognitive load and approaching significance with no load. The bias in smokers was larger than that of non-smokers, significantly so in the load condition. Bias towards smoking cues was also larger than bias towards food cues, suggesting the attention-grabbing properties of smoking cues are stronger than that of a natural reward cue. Smokers’ attentional bias towards subliminal smoking cues was negative, providing no evidence of attentional bias effects in subliminal conditions, however the size of the bias correlated significantly with self-reported urge to smoke. The limitations of methods using subliminally presented cues, the nature of non-conscious associations and individual differences in how cognitive load affected participants are discussed in relation to future research.

Attentional bias in smokers: exposure to dynamic smoking cues in contemporary movies.
Research has shown that smokers have an attentional bias for pictorial smoking cues. The objective of the present study was to examine whether smokers also have an attentional bias for dynamic smoking cues in contemporary movies and therefore fixate more quickly, more often and for longer periods of time on dynamic smoking cues than non-smokers. By drawing upon established methods for assessing...
متن کاملAttentional biases to pain and social threat in children with recurrent abdominal pain.
OBJECTIVES To test whether children with recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) exhibit subliminal (nonconscious) and supraliminal (conscious) attentional biases to pain-related words, and to determine correlates of these biases. Previous research indicates that individuals attend to disorder-relevant threat words, and in this study, attentional biases to disorder-relevant threat (pain), alternative th...

The present study investigated attentional and evaluative biases for smoking-related cues in cigarette smokers and non-smokers. Using a visual probe task, we manipulated the presentation conditions of the stimuli to examine: (1). whether smokers have a bias to allocate attention towards smoking-related pictures that appear below the threshold of conscious awareness; and (2). whether attentional...

متن کاملImplicit and explicit selective attention to smoking cues in smokers indexed by brain potentials.
Substance use disorders are characterized by cognitive processing biases, such as automatically detecting and orienting attention towards drug-related stimuli. However, it is unclear how, when and what kind of attention (i.e. implicit, explicit) interacts with the processing of these stimuli. In addition, it is unclear whether smokers are hypersensitive to emotionally significant cues in genera...
